Propane Chillers

Propane chillers up to 800kW, operating on R290 refrigerant grade propane

The Aqua Propane Range

Efficiency, reliability & sustainability come together with our range of Aqua Propane chillers. Designed for process applications, operating on R290 refrigerant grade propane, they’re an excellent choice for both your business and the planet.

With cooling capacity from 5kW to 800kW and the ability to operate down to -20°C, they’re versatile units, suitable for a range of requirements. With high thermal conductivity and good heat transfer properties, propane is an effective refrigerant for low, medium, and high temperature applications.

Why Propane?

Choosing propane as a refrigerant will future proof your cooling system infrastructure, keep your operating costs low and significantly impact the sustainably credentials of your business.

R290 is a natural refrigerant, with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of < 3 and is widely recognised as an ideal replacement to popular hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) like R410A.

The European F-gas directive of 2014 signalled the beginning of the phase down of HFCs, or greenhouse gases as they’re more commonly known. Whilst some refrigerants are prohibited, the use of others has been significantly phased down. Previously popular refrigerants are now difficult to source and expensive to purchase, but with R290 these issues disappear.

R290 is currently 50% cheaper per kg than R410A but, as HFCs get closer to phase out, this cost difference will only increase. In addition, R290 has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0, is non-toxic and odourless. It’s also a pure refrigerant, so there’s no glide to account for, giving consistent, stable operating temperatures.

If you’re looking to take steps towards a greener future, it’s worth nothing that our Heat Pump range can supply water as high as 65°C, enabling you to consider adding heat recovery to your process. From a sustainability perspective, we can also supply CO2 chillers and even our standard process chiller & free cooling chiller ranges operate on low GWP refrigerants.  Our Engineers will work with you to  help you decide the best option for your specific requirements.

Propane Chillers Future Proof Dairy Case study

Effective temperature management is key to dairy processing. Standard processes, such as pasteurisation, use temperature control to meet food safety requirements and to maintain product quality. A dairy, based in the North of England, approached Aqua to support them with the design, supply & installation of a replacement cooling system which could underpin their processes for years to come.

Features & Benefits of our Propane Chillers

Refrigerant aside, here’s just some of the benefits that our Aqua Propane units offer over others in the marketplace:

  • ATEX rated reciprocating semi-hermetic compressor, ATEX rated ventilation fans & leak detection system. Ensures safe operation, eliminating risk of gas build up.
  • Unique self-cleaning evaporator (units over 30kW). Units up to 30kW have a coaxial evaporator.
  • EC fan technology – enhances energy efficiency and keeps noise levels low.
  • Robust, process specific design, including powder coated, galvanised steel frame.
  • Electronic expansion valves (units over 16kW) – maximises efficiency.
  • Heat recovery available – capable of achieving water temperature of 65°
