Tackling Hot Spots Within Data Centres
Hot Spot Cooling – Aqua’s innovative cooling products are ideal for tackling “Hot Spots” within the Data Centre environment.
Although Data Centre operation requires a large amount of power, much of this is given off as waste heat. If this heat is not equally distributed, or air flow distribution has been disrupted through expansion into higher densities or cable and pipe management beneath raised floors, cabinets or whole areas of high temperature appear and create identifiable and problematic Hot Spots. In Data Centres that have been designed without extra space for additional cooling equipment, Hot Spots often lead to a troublesome imbalance in the centre’s air system.
These “Hot Spots” are particularly common in legacy Data Centres that were originally designed as relatively low density. As the power density of the facility is increased and/or equipment is up-scaled then Hot Spots can evolve. These Hot Spots are potentially devastating as they can cause highly critical equipment to overheat and run inefficiently and, worst case scenario, completely fail.

Our USP is our ability to offer clients a complete turnkey solution. We’ll work with you from initial site visit and system design to installation and commissioning. Our services include:
- Free design consultancy, including AutoCAD drawings, 3D modelling and energy calculations
- Mechanical and electrical installation – encompassing civil works, offloading & positioning, pipework installation, mains power and cabling, all CDM compliance, full project management and delivery
- Aftersales support – including preventive maintenance plans to maximise product lifespan and efficiency
Our business is built on our core values of technical excellence, care, integrity and a “can do” attitude. We train all our people to be specialists in what they do – innovative engineers dedicated to providing practical, effective and efficient solutions supported by second-to-none customer service.
The Aqua system consists of a water cooled rear door that can be retro fitted directly on to the back of existing racks. This prevents overheating and eliminates any Hotspots whilst increasing the air flow throughout the Data Centre itself.
Aqua’s Hot Spot removal system offers an innovative alternative that takes up significantly less space, eliminates overheating even when catering for up to 40kW per cooling rack. Placing water on to the back of cabinets might be seen as a risk by some Data Centre professionals but our award-winning Leak Prevention System (LPS) protects Data Centre equipment from any potential water damage with a 100% leak-free guarantee!
If you have an existing chiller systems serving perimeter CRAC units, the system design also uses no extra flow. It simply piggy-backs the existing system by using the flow of warm return water, without requiring any additional water flow to generate an increased cooling capacity. Interestingly, most Data Centres have enough chiller capacity but are restricted on flow.
Hot Spot Removal Installation
The system can be installed in a live centre by simply shutting down one CRAC and a small pipe work modification.
Data Centre equipment is cooled by water circulating through a series of underground or over ground pipes running from the LPS unit to the cooling system’s drawer doors. This Data Centre Cooling system automatically caters from 1kW up to 40kW per cabinet by varying the fan speed of the door and has been credited with helping the entire room due to the increased air flow. This is ideal for high-powered computing and can be installed without the need for any expensive and inconvenient downtime.
The system is easy to install and can fit onto any manufacturer’s rack. There’s no need to remove existing cooling systems to create space for our new system, nor does it rely on expanding Data Centre structure. Not only can it extend the life of existing Data Centre coolers, but they are also able to cope with higher density cooling racks.
Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU)
Alternatively, if it is only a couple of racks and space is restricted, our versatile mini cooling distribution unit (CDU) has been uniquely tailored for Data Centre Hotspot removal.
It is simple to install and a cost-effective technology for situations with an existing cooling system in place.
The CDU, or Temperation Unit, is small and compact and easily fitted in the bottom 8U of a cooling rack or underneath a 300mm raised floor.
